Chapter 34
"Fatal" Mistake

Rong Qian made a "fatal" mistake.

This led to Rong Qian driving back with a stern expression on her face, lips pressed into a straight line. She didn't engage in small talk, her serious demeanor emitting an aura of unwelcomeness.

In the heat of the moment, Rong Qian, feeling desperate, pulled the trigger before the other person could shoot.

The man took a bullet to the chest and fell to the ground.

The scene fell into a deathly silence. Everyone looked at her in terror for shooting someone. However, Rong Qian, at the time, calmly put the gun away.

She hadn't killed the man. If he received timely medical attention, he wouldn't die, and Shen Yi wasn't injured either.

Chen Shiyi was rescued by Lu Xuan. It could be said that the rescue went smoothly, and Lin Feng and the others only suffered minor injuries, which could be treated with some medicine.

So why was Rong Qian still feeling upset?

Because she fired a gun...

One bullet was missing from the pistol. How would she write her report when she got back? Was she supposed to say she left the bullet in 1972 America?

How could such a report be submitted?!

Thinking about this, Rong Qian frowned, feeling distressed and at a loss. This report was too difficult to write!

And Rong Qian's distress, seen by Shen Yi, turned into—fear.

Shen Yi's face didn't look good either. After getting into the car, he kept his head down, his fists clenched tightly. Rong Qian's expression when she fired the gun kept replaying in his mind.

She must have been scared too at the time.

To save him, she fired a gun for the first time in her life. Afterward, to keep them from worrying, she had to pretend to be calm. The more Shen Yi thought about it, the more uncomfortable he felt.

"Come in, Shen Yi. There's all sorts of medicine in the house. Those who are injured can go upstairs to treat themselves, and those who aren't can come to the kitchen to help. It's been a busy day, and no one has eaten anything. Let's just have something simple together."

At six in the evening, Rong Qian drove back to St. Law Street. After changing her shoes and entering the house, she treated it like her own home, inviting them in without any formality.

Lin Feng and Jesse were both bruised. Chen Shiyi helped them with the medicine, while Lu Xuan went to the kitchen to assist Shen Yi.

As for Rong Qian, tired from the day's events, she collapsed on the sofa as soon as she got back and didn't feel like moving.

Moreover, she wanted to help with cooking, but someone wouldn't let her into the kitchen.

With half-closed eyes, Rong Qian noticed that although Chen Shiyi appeared calm on the surface, her trembling hands when administering the medicine revealed her inner fear.

Rong Qian walked over, patted her head, and comforted her, "It's okay now. Just be careful in the future, and don't act alone. Always let us know where you're going, okay?"

Hearing Rong Qian's words, Chen Shiyi's tears finally fell uncontrollably.

Chen Shiyi suddenly hugged Rong Qian, burying her face in her chest and started crying, choking out, "I was so scared... I was really scared..."

"It's okay, it's okay. Don't be afraid. Let it all out." Rong Qian gently patted her back to soothe her.

Lin Feng and Jesse watched them with their heads tilted up, and after a while, Jesse, who was dumbfounded, said, "I'm so jealous."

Lin Feng gave him a disdainful look. What a disgrace!

Although he was also envious, he didn't say it!

Lu Xuan, holding a green onion, stood at the kitchen door and peeked out. Seeing this scene, Lu Xuan felt warm in his heart.

He walked over to Shen Yi and said, "Your sister is so gentle, calm in the face of danger, and strong too."

As he spoke, Lu Xuan suddenly paused, then observed Shen Yi's expression carefully. He asked cautiously, "Shen Yi, what does your sister do? How could she have..."

"Don't ask." That was Shen Yi's reply.

Lu Xuan nodded. He wouldn't press further. If someone didn't want to talk about something, he wouldn't pry.

"Also," Shen Yi looked up at him and said in a low voice, "she's not my sister."

After comforting Chen Shiyi, Rong Qian entered the kitchen, intending to ask if dinner was ready, only to find that only Lu Xuan was there. Shen Yi was absent.

Rong Qian walked over and asked, "Where's Shen Yi?"

"He said he went out to catch his breath. I'm finishing up here. It's almost done," Lu Xuan replied, scooping out a serving of stir-fried chili pork.

Rong Qian sniffed the aroma and praised, "It smells delicious." Then, she went to find Shen Yi.

Shen Yi sat alone on the stairs. Since the corridor lights wouldn't come on until seven, the entire staircase was still dim. He sat there quietly, as if he wanted to blend into the darkness.

"What are you doing?"

Rong Qian's cheerful voice broke the gloomy silence.

At the same time, the corridor lights came on. Shen Yi looked up and saw Rong Qian leaning on the staircase railing, smiling at him. There seemed to be stars in her eyes, and her smile was dazzling.

"Did you hurt your hand?"

Seeing a little scrape on his hand, Rong Qian took out a band-aid from her pocket, walked over, and sat next to him to apply it.

After she finished, Rong Qian looked up and reminded him, "If you're hurt, you should say so instead of keeping it to yourself." Before she could finish her sentence, Shen Yi hugged her.

Rong Qian looked bewildered, but Shen Yi quickly let go, as if it was an encouraging hug and he barely touched her.

No one knew how Shen Yi restrained himself from crossing the line with that hug.

"You..."

"Go back inside," Shen Yi stood up, not letting her ask further.

Rong Qian blinked. What's gotten into this kid all of a sudden? Was he scared and seeking comfort by hugging her?

Rong Qian thought the meal with these few people would be eaten with lingering fear, but she was wrong.

Youthful indeed! Once they snapped out of their fear, they became excited about today's historic feat!

Lin Feng even brought a case of beer, claiming they wouldn't leave until they were drunk and poured drinks for everyone enthusiastically.

When it was Shen Yi's turn, Rong Qian stopped him. Smiling, she said, "Underage can't drink."

So, Shen Yi drank juice alone, while Rong Qian happily drank with these young adults who were already over eighteen.

And then, Rong Qian got them all drunk.

Rong Qian laughed and shook her head. They were still young, with such low alcohol tolerance.

Meanwhile, Shen Yi, who had already eaten his fill, sat quietly on the side reading a book. Rong Qian watched him and realized he hadn't changed much since childhood.

Even at twelve, he often sat quietly reading. Rong Qian could even imagine him in the future, mature and stable, sitting on the sofa reading.

"Can I ask you something?" Rong Qian spoke up.

Shen Yi put down his book and looked up at her.

Rong Qian said, "If I hadn't found Chen Shiyi, would you have wanted to seek help from your dad?"

Shen Yi lowered his eyes and said after a moment, "Yes, although I don't want to admit it, with his influence, the police wouldn't dare ignore his words."

"But he wouldn't help unconditionally, so if you sought his help, you'd have to compromise on many things." This was such a simple truth that Rong Qian understood, and so did Shen Yi.

Shen Yi didn't say anything. Obviously, he had prepared for this. He had this idea back in the car.

Rong Qian took a sip of beer, her gaze gradually becoming unfocused. She recalled the conversation she had with Shen Chi when she met him that day.

Strictly speaking, it was Rong Qian who made a "deal" with him.

And that deal was related to Shen Yi's future...
